Untethered Web-series

Butcher Bird Studios created 2 branded content web-series (16 episodes) for portable power company TYLT that are currently releasing at TYLT.com/untethered and on their Facebook page. Untethered: My Passion introduces us to 9 unique people actively living their passions and covers a wide range of interests spanning music to fashion to comic books to photography to BASE jumping. Untethered: On the Road follows Erika Terriquez and Butcher Bird’s Jason Milligan on a 55 day road trip across 42 U.S. states as they live out of a coupe, document their travels, experience new things, and meet their work-related deadlines.

Get Ready for G.O.

1 September 2014. That is the day all four 5-minute episodes of G.O. Get Outside will go live. It has taken half a year to create these shorts pertaining to caving, hiking, surfing, and canyoneering. If you have ever had any interest in one of those activities or a yearning to get outdoors, tune in. Hopefully you will step away inspired to pursue one of them (or all of them) and informed on how to get started.

Consistent Momentum

Production continues on our outdoor series. We have officially passed the half-way point on principal photography. In the last couple of weeks, we’ve wrapped one of our interviews and our canyoneering footage. Shooting also began on the surfing episode. Lots of people are helping make this happen and I am extremely grateful to all of them. More screengrabs below.

Underground

caving_screengrab016

Production has begun on a series of shorts we are creating highlighting various outdoor activities. It will be a four episode web-series premiering later this year. Two weeks ago, a few of us traveled to Nevada with Karl Domangue and his Extreme Things Adventure Club to capture the excitement of caving. It was a weekend of caving, camping, and interviewing. Several screengrabs from the footage are posted below. After wrapping photography on the caving episode, we began preparations for our hiking episode. In an ironic turn of events, Southern California’s drought experienced a short reprieve as a storm poured across the area for a few days. We were able to shoot our interview portion, but had to reschedule shooting the rest of the episode until later this month. In a week, we will head out again, this time delving into the growing sport of canyoneering.

Behind the Hike

In addition to our other productions, Butcher Bird Studios is moving into outdoor and adventure video. The quadcopter is the latest tool we’ve adopted to aid in that pursuit and our other production work. In September of 2013 we ventured into the Ansel Adams Wilderness to test the copter and our own abilities.

Aerial Footage shot with GoPro HD Hero 3 on a DJI Phantom.
Behind the Scenes footage shot with Canon 7D and Sony FS700.
Interviews shot with Panasonic GH1.
Audio recorded with Tascam DR100.

Additional aerial footage shot in Joshua Tree National Park and Texas Canyon.

Outside in 2013

We are taking many steps in 2014 to build and expand Butcher Bird Studios. One of my goals for awhile has been to move some of our productions into the world of outdoor/adventure sports. I am in the preproduction phase for a couple of such projects at the moment, but it will be some time before there is anything to share. In the meantime, you can get a taste for the sorts of activities I want to highlight by watching my annual GoPro compilation embedded above.

Lakes and Copters

We have continued to experiment with the DJI Phantom Quadcopter mounted with a GoPro Hero 3 on a Zenmuse H3-2D gimbal (I’m glad I typed that and didn’t have to say it out loud). A few weeks ago, the four of us spent the weekend backpacking through the Ansel Adams Wilderness field-testing the copter along with some other gear. Travis and Shlain each cut together some of the test footage into two videos evoking very different moods.
